Origins of Vedic Maths

Vedic Maths tracks its origin to the Vedas which were ancient scripts (texts) for knowledge and wisdom. Primarily Atharavaveda which is one of the Vedas is known to have details of  Vedic Maths origins.

vedic-mathes-001

Vedic Maths was made more popular by Vedic Guru Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji in between 1911 – 1918. Sri Tirthaji constructed 16 Sutras and their sub sutras for fast and easy calculations.

The simplicity of Vedic Maths systems was so profound that maths calculations can be carried out mentally with lighting speed. Difficult Mathematical problems can be solved in no time by Vedic Maths techniques.

Amazing Power of Vedic Maths

Let us take an example to show the Amazing Power of Vedic Maths over Normal calculation method.

Take for an example of a complex calculation of Mathematics of doing multiplication of a 3 digit number with another 3 digit number

First Number being 999 and second number being 998

Hence using normal method of multiplication of 999 X 998 could take anywhere between 2-3 minutes or more depending on how fast the person is calculating manually using normal steps

However by Vedic Maths, we can calculate the same mentally in 3 seconds flat

Let us see how to calculate in 3 seconds flat. One similarity with both these numbers is they are closer to number 1000.

Hence 999 is 1 less than 100 & 998 is 2 less than 1000.

Considering the numbers are less than 1000, we consider a minus (-) symbol next to the difference between both the numbers.

Hence, mentally we think of 2 numbers (-2) and (-1) and then multiply them

-2 X -1 = 2(Result)

However considering these numbers are closer to 1000 and 1000 have 3 zero`s hence our first portion of result would be 002. This is right most portion of answer.

Now Cross subtract either of the initial 2 numbers with the difference from 1000. Hence you can do either of the following mentally

999 – 2 = 997

or

998 – 1 = 997

This is left most portion of answer 997.

Combining Left and Right portion of Answers, we get actual answer for the multiplication which is 997002.

Considering both the numbers were closer to 1000 hence we take 1000 as base as we call this method BASE 1000 method.

Now use the same technique to compute 994 X 996 in 3 seconds flat. You would find it amazing as the answer that we get is really fast and that to computing mentally.

Squaring Numbers in 5 seconds

Let us take another example for Squaring of 2 Digit numbers. This Vedic Maths Technique is applicable for numbers between 30 and 70.

Let us see how we can square 52 in 3 seconds flat. We here take 50 as the base and 50 if Squared is 2500.

Left Most Portion of Answer is 25(base 50 square) + 2(Difference of Number from 50, which is 52-50) = 25 +2 = 27

Right Most Portion of Answer is Square of the Difference (in this case 2 square) = 04

Hence the Answer is 2704.

Same way for numbers which are less than 50, we subtract the difference from 25 instead of addition.

Now practice calculating Square of Number 54 in 3 seconds mentally. You will find the method awesome as result is in few seconds and that too mentally.

Benefits of Vedic Maths

Vedic Maths once consistently used shows improved academic performance for the students.

It increases mental agility as one is able to do lot of complex calculations mentally and get answers within seconds.

Students practising Vedic Maths Techniques are able to get instant results as calculations are up to 15 times faster than the normal maths.

It is really helpful in improving student`s confidence for normal maths school curriculum or for any entrance exams as students are able to do mental maths calculations at lightning speed via Vedic Maths Techniques.

Vedic Maths sharpens Students mind and intelligence by regular practise as it keeps students brain in active mode.

Vedic Maths Reach

Vedic Maths is not only beneficial for Addition, subtraction, Multiplication, Division problems but also helpful in solving complex mathematical equations problems.

In this competitive world where every Sec counts during time of exams, Vedic Maths enlightens us to take the Journey of Mathematical knowledge with much more confidence.

Let us embrace ourselves as students to improve ourselves in learning and practising a true Indian Vedic system called Vedic Maths.

Hello gaurav What is a suitable age for kids to start learning vedic maths .. do they need to know Sanskrit ? Thanks and Regards
    • Gaurav says:
Hi Mugdha, This is a good question as lot of people think that Vedic Maths can only be taught for Higher classes or at higher age. Vedic Maths can be taught starting from Class 2nd onwards. I have devised 3 levels of Courses for Children of various ages. First Level is Foundation Level which is primarily for Children from Class 2nd - 4th. Second Level is Intermediate Level which is for Children from Class 5th to 7th. Third Level is Advanced Level which is for Students from Class 8th to 12th or higher. The content and complexity of each levels are different are in line with schools/Board curriculum or for entrance examinations like CAT/Bank PO. Lastly they dont need to know Sanskrit. Gaurav

Interesting.Would like to know the reference books on this subject for begginers. What about decimal calculations method of solving the problems.
    • Gaurav says:
Hi Shashi, Vedic Maths although being a truly Indian Course is not very well Marketed neither publicized. Majority of Books on Subject are related to Advanced level of Vedic Maths which for Beginner level students would be too difficult to comprehend. I have devised 3 levels of courses with various difficulties. I am planning to get Books published for various levels of courses so that reach of Vedic Maths is more within India and abroad. Yes Decimal calculations can be solved by using Vedic Maths Methods. Gaurav
  14. Narasimha A Solinghur says:
Hi, Vedic Maths is really a fantastic method of doing calculations very faster. I have developed few more easy Calculation methods of my own. Of which, Calendar for 1000 crore years is of much familiar. Thanks & Regards, Narasimha A Solinghur.
  15. Maheswari says:
i tried for square of 43, but i got wrong answer plz guide
    • Janhavi says:
It should be simple 43 is 7 less than 50 so just as is explained We here take 50 as the base and 50 if Squared is 2500. so the base number is 25 Now since the number 43 is 7 less than 50 we 25-7 =18 this is our left number Now square of 7 is 49 is the right number so the answer is 1849 which is the right answer.
    • Baburaj says:
For numbers which are less than 50, we subtract the difference from 25 instead of addition. Left Most Portion of Answer is 25 (base 50 square) - 7 (Difference of Number from 50, which is 50-43) = 25 - 7 = 18 Right Most Portion of Answer is Square of the Difference (in this case 7 square) = 49 Hence the Answer is 1849. I am not a Vedit student, but learnt from the above example.
    • Gaurav says:
Hi Maheswari, Vedic Maths Method does work. You might need to refer to technique to be used as mentioned in the article. Numbers which are less than 50, we subtract the difference from 25 instead of addition. Let me show you with number you have selected Left Most Portion of Answer is 25(base 50 square) - 7(Difference of Number from 50, which is 50- 43) = 25 - 7 = 18 Right Most Portion of Answer is Square of the Difference (in this case 7 square) = 49 Hence the Answer is 1849. Hope it is clear now.
  16. ABDUL MAJID says:
REMEMBERING HINTS IS WASTE INSTEAD OF DOING PRACTICE AND GETTING CONCEPT OF THE PROBLEM....ONCE U KNOW THE CONCEPT THEN U CAN MAKE SHORTCUTS AND VEDIC PART 2..... I MY VIEW SHORTCUT IS FOR APTITUDE EXAMS FOR ADULT NOT FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN.FIRST WE HAVE TO KNOW THE LONG PROCEDURE OF SOLVING PROBLEM THAN ONLY WE CAN KNOW THE SHORTCUT THAT TOO MORE FIRMLY....IF I M WRONG PLEASE MAKE ME CORRECT..
    • Preetha says:
Yes, I agree with you. Shortcuts are required and to be taught only after a child learns the concept via traditional method.
    • Gaurav Sharma says:
Hi Abdul, your point is fine where we should be learning normal concepts first however how have we come to know that these are normal concepts needs to be thought of. If we are tuned to identify a concept as a normal concept historically then possibly we are referring to something which is conveyed as a normal concept. Secondly, now coming to Vedic Maths concepts, it is more than just hints where it dwells on the actual concept and uses special techniques to transform Maths into new domain. Applicability of Vedic Maths concepts can come in different competitive exams but it can be applied in day to day activities. A simple example would be computing mentally your Grocery Bills are correct or not. Once you start applying Vedic Maths concepts in normal day to day activities you would find a change in way people see you. Lastly, it has been proven by research that post certain age you need to keep your brain more active by challenging it more else people might end up in forgetfulness. Practising concepts of Vedic Maths keeps brains active and Agilent.

  18. Abhishek kumar says:
An interesting calculation which i used to find place to place........
  19. Megha Basu says:
This is impressive. However, it seems that only everyday practice would make the task easy.
    • Gaurav Sharma says:
Megha, i have done some research on Memory Techniques and their applicability. A Lot of times, it is to do with how we use our Working memory more effectively as working memory capacity is limited. A Simple example would be if you have to remember a sequence of 7 digit or 8 digit numbers - 6 or 7 of such numbers, it wouldnt be easy to memorize. Same thing if i use a memory technique to learn you would be able to learn and retain it faster. Regular Practice always can be done over period of time but how effectively we do the practice also matters. You can read my another article on ThinkVidya for Revision Techniques under Exam Preparation section.

  25. SATISH RAMCHANDRA SHINGAVEKAR says:
vedic maths should not be treated as substitute for regular maths. It should be learnt as interesting short cut method after getting familiar with the concepts of high school algebra.
    • Gaurav Sharma says:
Satish, Vedic Maths is not a substitute for regular maths however the same maths concepts can be learnt easily with Vedic Maths. It also co relates to how we use our working memory more efficiently as at times we are so used to calculators whereas Vedic Maths focusses on doing Mental Maths which keeps one`s brain active and Agilent.
  26. Amit Rathee says:
As far as speed in calculations is considered its good to use vedic maths. But think ! If a person is good or fast in calculations does it means that he/she is good in mathematics. This may help in some problems of competitive exams which try to judge the speed of calculation.
    • Gaurav Sharma says:
Amit, Let me explain in a different manner. If we were taught Vedic Maths right from beginning, you might not have taken Vedic Maths differently. Hence it is how we integrate Vedic Maths with regular Maths that would make us think about the difference. You are seeing little difference because Vedic Maths hasnt been made popular in India inspite of fact that it is pure Indian Maths. Hence on the contrary i have seen students who have gained more interest in Regular Maths post learning Vedic Maths. Moreover a lot of people do take Maths as a subject difficult to understand, Vedic Maths removes that barrier and generates interest to follow and command regular Maths more confidently.
  27. Amit Rathee says:
Learning of vedic maths is very good and its very interesting. But it is a little different from real mathematics. Vedic Maths offer tricks which may weak the interest of student in learning basic mathematics. This is good to learn these short tricks after learning basic of mathematics.
    • Gaurav Sharma says:
Amit, my experience has been that learners had more interested in Regular Maths post learning Vedic Maths. It also depends how any subject is taught, hence you need to have a good teacher with a good teaching technique to teach such a subject.

It is great. The charm of speedy calculations is fading out with calculators taking the place of brains. It should be made a part of our curriculum. The younger generation should know and experience the joy of mental mathematics. I have always wondered if cube roots could be calculated with this technique.

Nice info. Thanks! I found an online Vedic Mathematics course for teachers by Gaurav Tekriwal, founder President of The Vedic Maths Forum India. This course has its focus on creating more value to teacher's current skill set by adding more knowledge about ancient methods of calculation. Vedic Maths not only improving the calculation speed but will add more horizon and will fetch more opportunities for the teachers to teach in some coaching Institutes that will equip the students appearing for competitive exams.
