Q. How and when your journey as a Calligrapher started?
Ans. While doing my graduation (1997-2000, B.Com) at Stella Maris College, I was very inspired by looking at the Fine Arts students. I wanted to write in decorative style and bring out the beauty of writing art and skill, like how they do through pictures and sceneries. From that point, I always wanted to join Calligraphy Classes. It took me 4 years to find a Calligraphy Teacher. In 2004, my dream of learning calligraphy was fulfilled in Chennai. Subsequently, I completed my Calligraphy Classes and started as a tutor at the same centre. I taught students from age 6 to above.
In 2004, I conducted Inter-School Handwriting competition, many students participated and the winner was given the title of ‘Best Calligrapher’.
From then I started conducting classes on Part 1 of Calligraphy, which I named as ‘handwriting enhancement’ and Part – 2 Calligraphy – students and teachers.
My experience in Part-1 of Calligraphy
I had worked with more than 1500 students to improve their writing. Students from around the world completed the course and are recognized for their work. In the Part I lessons, students improve their handwriting drastically, one can see the difference visibly. One develops skills like concentration, memory and also speed up their handwriting without losing its beauty. Finally leaving an impact on one’s personality.
I had helped many board exam students to speed up their writings. A child who was born “HYPER” where he cannot sit in one proper place, on completion of this course has changed totally, another kid who was unable to write any notes without scribbling or over writing, due this course he has started to write very neatly and his improvement was recognized in the school.
I discovered many students are having problem in holding the pencil/pen/right hand/left hand and many more. When the child starts writing naturally they will start using left or right hand whichever is comfortable. I would suggest parents please don’t force your child to write in a particular hand of your choice.
In Part-2 of Calligraphy, I have been imparting the art of calligraphy to more than 500 students. Many of my students have become professional calligraphers. I have personally taken up to work on certificates, invitations and orientation to schools.
Many adults whom I trained have started their own schools and centres.
Q. What skills are required to become a successful Calligraphy teacher?
Ans. In order to become a calligrapher you just need to have an immense passion as calligraphy is just not about concepts but it’s a blend of ART and CREATIVITY.
To become a calligraphy teacher you need a lot of patience, it is not only an eye to eye attention course but also you need to motivate the student a lot, need to go down to the student’s level and understand every individual student’s capacity. Be with the student and never give up on them.
In 2003, a student who was not great in studies came to me, to help him identify where he was lacking. While doing the course I found he needs a lot of motivation and his vocabulary and grammar was very weak. During the class hours apart from Calligraphy lessons, as an eye break session I made him read newspapers and taught basics of English grammar. He was very inspired and learnt a lot. Soon he picked up and improved in studies as well. That’s where I believe, “Winners do some more!” to become successful.
I have always truly believed in a fact stated by Howard Schultz that “When you’re surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.”
Q. How you came across UrbanPro?
Ans. I came across UrbanPro in the year 2013. I registered myself as a Premium Member. At that point of time, I was desperately looking for a website where I could showcase my Calligraphy skills and spread the beautiful art of writing to as many as possible.
Q. How UrbanPro platform helped you to expand your Calligraphy classes?
Ans. I am glad that UrbanPro is doing a tremendous service to the students’ community by providing the details of teachers all across the locality where the students are looking for.
I particularly like how teachers’ profiles are created with qualifications and experiences, separate gallery to showcase our work or anything related to teaching. There are systematic provisions for writing reviews by parents and students, helping them to take right hiring decisions according to their learning requirements.
UrbanPro was of great support when I was relocating to Bangalore. I had to give up my career due to family commitment. It was at that crucial moment of my life that I found UrbanPro where I could pursue my interest. I registered myself in 2013 April, since then I have been a part of UrbanPro. It’s been 3 successful years with UrbanPro.
My strength lies with my students and their parents, as their valuable feedback gives me guidance and motivation to strive for higher level of outcome. Till date I have got 32 positive reviews and received the ‘Excellence Award Winner 2015‘ Best Calligraphy teacher in Bangalore.
Q. What do you think you wished you had known early on UrbanPro?
Ans. I would have got more students. UrbanPro helped me to realise my full potential.
Q. What percentage of your work comes from UrbanPro?
Ans. 75% – 80% students are from UrbanPro.
Q. One advice that you would like to give to new Pros on UrbanPro.
Ans. Love your passion for teaching, be with the student and go down to the student’s level, even if it is a single student give your BEST. Try to get reviews from every student you teach and never give up your hope and clarify your queries with the UrbanPro Support Team. Be an active tutor on UrbanPro, definitely, “YOU CAN WIN”!
