Effective Tips for Online Tutoring

Tutoring is a noble profession and irrespective of the fact that you might be tutoring a regular batch of students or interacting with them through the online module, your key endeavour should be to impart quality knowledge.

Online TutoringThe 2 Methods of Online Tutoring

Two major ways of online tutoring are as:

1. Online one to one session
2. Recording a course and uploading the same

Online One on One Session

A one on one session requires both the tutor and the learner to be online at the same time. As a tutor, you need to be innovative enough to keep alive the interest of the students in the session. You need to have conceptual knowledge on the topics you are sharing with the students. Clarity of thoughts will increase the confidence level of the students and they will feel a liking towards you.

Posing stimulating questions

While interacting with the pupils, you need to pose stimulating questions to the students. The trick is to keep the interest of the students alive so that they pay full attention to the topic which is being debated.

You can ask the students about the assignments which they have completed the previous day. This will keep the interest of the students alive as they will need to cross check their facts and come up with a suitable answer to the query you have raised.

Guided Learning

You need to remember that your role as a mentor is your biggest achievement. To achieve this objective, you need to act as a guide while answering queries of the student. If you are mentoring a batch of students, you need to understand that not all students are alike.

Like in any regular tutoring session, you need to identify the weak students in the lot and offer them adequate support. Your skill lies in guiding these students to achieve good grades and come up with a better performance.

Check through their assignments on a regular basis and check out the performance of your students on a daily basis. If you repeat this practice on a regular basis, you will find that the performance graph of your weak students will improve and they will show up with great results.

Surprise Tests

Even if you are coaching a single student or a group of students, this strategy works well. By questioning the knowledge of your students, you are in a position to know their skill set and prepare a course of action for the weak students.

Recording a course and uploading the same

Another viable method of online tutoring is recording a course and uploading the same. To read about how to record an online course, click here.

The strategy for recorded courses is somewhat different from one to one interaction with the students and you need to follow a well defined strategy to achieve success here.

Specifying course goals

As you will not be having direct communication with the students, the first step you need to undertake is to specify the course goals. The objective here is to brief the students about the course content and incite their interest in your thought process.
In the first stage you need to specify course goals, objectives and a brief description of the course structure. You also need to specify the course material required for the online sessions.

Creating an ambient atmosphere

As you will not be interacting live with the students, you need to create an ambient atmosphere for the students where they feel connected with you. For the start, you need to pose a welcome message for the students. Include a brief orientation about the course material and the methodology so that the students get familiarized with the entire coursework.

Have a Discussion Forum

Since you will not be interacting directly with the students, it would be great if you create a discussion forum for the students. Ask them to share their queries in the discussion forum and reply to each of their query on an individual basis. You will notice that the interest level of students will increase and the performance graph will too show an upward swing.

Feedback session

At the end of each lesson you post through online videos, ensure that you give a feedback on the assignments which your students have completed during the previous session. This will keep the interest of the students alive and they will pay attention to your every question or comment.

Online Learning is the future of education. With the advancement in technology, online medium of interaction is getting popular. By applying some basic principles to your teaching, you can be an effective communicator thereby being able to share the best of your knowledge with the learners.

I might try using surprise tests. It would definitely be important to present them in the correct light, though. I mean that you wouldn’t want to stress the people out by threatening them with tests. Biggest part of online tutoring for me is making sure the technology works for me rather than against me. Using software like Idroo or Scribblar can help my student feel as if he is in the same room as the tutor.
