Boarding School or Day School – Where Should You Admit Your Child?

In order to be able to judge which the better option is,one has to first understand that both boarding schools and day schools have their own pros and cons. Choosing the right option depends on the requirements of the child and also the atmosphere that he or she has grown up in. Both boarding schools and day schools have several benefits and understanding them is the first step. Some of the aspects that you should consider while you are admitting your child have been listed below:

Dependence

Some children are highly dependent on others, especially parents, and one has to consider this before choosing a school. Boarding schools allow parents to visit only for a few days in a year and if the child is incapable of coping with the parent’s absence, it might lead to several unforeseen consequences. Parents are restricted from visiting, as many parents
find it difficult to visit regularly and other children might feel aggrieved. Some children require constant tuition, especially from their parents when they are growing up. Boarding schools might not offer personalized tuition programs and this might affect the grades of the children. Day schools are a better option for those children who require constant guidance and parents will be able to monitor the situation and provide help as and when required.

However one also has to consider the fact that children should learn to be independent and deal with difficult and tough situations on their own. This will help them grow as an individual and admitting one’s child in a boarding school is a good way to bring out the best in him or her. Moreover, children who are in day schools can be admitted in tuition centers of the parent’s choice if required.

Convenience

Day schools are more convenient and parents generally opt for a school that is located close by to their homes or offices. This helps parents access the schools easily in case of any emergency and also better interaction with teachers is possible. Day schools often fit according to the work timings of the parents and this facilitates dropping and picking up of
children as well. Boarding schools also have the benefit that once the child is settled in and has adjusted to his boarding school surroundings, parents will not have any issues at all, as the child will most probably be completely taken care of in his hostel environment at   school.

Family Problems

Family problems are a major factor that influences a parent’s decisions and boarding schools are an ideal option if the family is going through a turbulent period. The children are kept away from all these negative influences and they will be able to concentrate on their studies in the boarding school. Problems such as a messy divorce can make parents opt for a boarding school over a day school, if and when they see something coming.

All the above aspects have to be considered while admitting a child into a school and as each child is different, parents will normally be in the best position to assess the situation and act accordingly. The main focus while choosing a school should be the child and what suits him or her best. The secondary focus has to be the quality of the school and the type of values they promote.

Both Day and Boarding schools have their own benefits and cons, and it’s up to the parent to make that informed decision, because at the end of the day, each child is different!
