Cloud Computing is a technology in which a network of remote servers are used via internet to store, manage and process data, instead of using the local server or hard disk. More and more individuals, companies and government organizations are adopting Cloud technologies. Reason?
This is because Cloud is economical with no upfront investment, efficient with faster connections, robust, good at proactive application monitoring, helps in disaster recovery, verifies identities, streamline processes, decreases capital cost, increases flexibility with less personnel training and much more.
What about the Future?
It is believed that Cloud Computing dates back to 50s and 60s. However, notably it started with MSN Hotmail in 1996, though the significant developments came with Salesforce in 1999 and Amazon Web Services in 2002.
It is believed that, “The Future is in the Cloud!” The way more and more companies are adopting Cloud, the future looks very bright and promising. Now companies, whether small or big can use applications and software from the remote server itself, without buying the licensed version. This leads to cost cutting, a lot of time saving and convenience. For instance, you can access the entire Microsoft or Adobe Suite, many of the CRM applciations, other useful applications like Asana, Dropbox, Zoho, Freshdesk, EverNote, Carbonite, Online storage services like S3from Amazon, Humyo, Microsoft’s SkyDrive, and so on.
Some of the vital cloud providers are Amazon Web Services, CenturyLink, Salesforce.com, Terremark, Citrix, Bluelock, Microsoft and VMware.
According to Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt,“The future of the cloud is of universal concern. Cloud adoption will soon become not a subject of debate but a matter of fact – and that IT departments should embrace the change. Today, moving to the cloud is not a questionable proposition – it’s inevitable.”
According to North Bridge Venture Partners, “The business is driving the revolution deriving clear benefits from cloud adoption in the form of continuous innovation and business agility to yield competitive advantage.”
Some significant points to be noted are:
1. Cloud Computing Deployment Models:
In future organizations will continue to work around public, private and hybrid cloud deployment models. On one hand, where companies will prefer public cloud to pool large amount of resources and applications without the need to purchase them, private cloud model will continue to rule where security is a vital concern. Many organizations will adopt a hybrid approach taking the advantages of public as well as private cloud computing. In fact, Hybrid approach will soon become the most preferred cloud computing deployment model in near future.
2. Cloud Computing Service Models:
The three service models of Cloud Computing – SaaS, IaaS and PaaS will continue to drive businesses. Though Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) based applications are at the apex (significantly being used in CRMs), in future, we see an acceleration in Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) as well as Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS).
3. Business-focus Cloud Adoption:
Cloud Computing will drive the businesses in the future. They will be more business-oriented than just being technology-oriented. This is evident from the fact that there are more Business-based Cloud applications coming up as compared to IT related Cloud applications. These applications will drive business efficiency, file sharing, Social media and CRM. Some of the IT based cloud applications will deal with Big Data, Helpdesk, Mobile applications, Security, System Management and so on. On a whole more and more businesses and Technologies will adopt Cloud in coming years.
4. Cloud will become more secure and reliable:
Though we all are well aware of the benefits and advantages cloud computing bring to the organizations, we are still skeptical about its security aspects. Not to worry now! Cloud is becoming more and more secure as it is maturing. Cloud application providers are continuously working towards improving the security of the data stored on their platform to ease the anxiety among the cloud users. Techniques to secure data are regualrly being improved through innovations and proactive apporach.
The future adoption of Cloud Computing by more and more organizations is inevitable. Though we may see some changes the way this technology works, but the basic essence of Cloud is going to stay for long. This is because Cloud Computing provides a competitive advantage to organizations by enabling them to become more profitable and efficient. With speedy innovations using latest technologies and resources, organizations can accelerate their growth and progress at a faster rate.
The future is indeed – Cloudy! 🙂
