Here is her experience & teaching journey in her own words:
Q1. When and how did you start working as a Tutor?
Ans. I have been working as an IELTS trainer for 3.5 years now and have a proven track record. Academically speaking, I have always been inclined towards the English language and have been a scholar all my learning years. I feel that I am good with explaining theoretical aspects and impart knowledge for better understanding of concepts.
IELTS is something that started as a freelance project but eventually turned into a field which I had a knack for. I had given my IELTS examination without any coaching and a day’s preparation and was able to get a good band score. I was on cloud nine with my result, but I had come across many people who were struggling to get the right kind of assistance for this course.
For starters, many, who claimed themselves to be tutors, were not proficient in communicating in English. Some institutes do not employ trained and qualified faculty, which makes the candidates suffer. So, I decided to give it a try and started from scratch in this field, worked with some institutions and, ultimately, groom myself for this course. People often confuse IELTS with an English exam primarily, but it is different from that.
Well, teaching IELTS brings a lot of satisfaction to me. It brings a feeling of contentment to see the results of my students. The joy and happiness they have once their scores are achieved, it makes my day. The overwhelming sense you get once you help someone achieve their dreams, it’s simply marvellous.
Q2. What skills are required to become an IELTS tutor?
Ans. Teaching IELTS should not be confused with teaching English. There is this conundrum in many people’s heads that an IELTS trainer is no different from an English teacher. Well, my area of expertise also involves teaching Spoken English and to be fair, the kind of teaching methods for both are very different. IELTS requires the trainer to understand the exam pattern, keep himself/herself updated related to any change in the exam format, and acquire the skill set necessary to impart the right kind of knowledge.
An IELTS trainer is required to be absolutely thorough with all the sections in the course, should be able to emphasize upon the tips and tricks that assist in understanding the subject better and should be able to solve all the queries and doubts of the student.
When it comes to categories like Spoken English, Communication skills and content writing, the teacher must be proficient in the language. The concepts related to grammar should be on the tips of the trainer. Also, discussion rounds are essential for the trainer to indulge in for the facilitation of building ideas.
Recently, I have started giving LLB classes as well. I have done my graduation and masters in law and have bagged the title of University topper. I am pursuing a PhD in the same field. I have given a few coaching classes in my neighbourhood and think that maybe it is time to take my area of expertise to another level.
Q3. What, according to you, helps you stand out from other IELTS Tutors on UrbanPro.com?
Ans. Every tutor indulges in different methods of teaching. The skills acquired by a tutor varies from person to person. Some depend upon the traditional style of teaching, whereas some follow a specific set of training. I have always been entirely dedicated to framing my training regime as per the requirements of my student. I customize my sessions as per the specifications and prerequisites listed by the student.
I am very flexible with the number of sessions in the course. If the students feel that they would not complete the tasks within the normal stipulated period, I make it a point to offer extra sessions to feel satisfied and content. Also, I provide hand-written notes, which I have compiled over the years after a dedicated amount of study and hard work. I take weekly or timely assessments between the course to feel confident and motivated to strive for better results. I think that self-assessment is exceptionally crucial to track the progress rate during the training process.
Also, I tend to maintain contact with my students post the completion of the course. Most of my students keep on asking me their doubts, to check new tasks they have completed related to the subject, and I feel happy to help them out.
Q4. How did you come across UrbanPro.com?
Ans. UrbanPro is one platform that I had always heard about, but never actually got the chance to try it. During the initial years of teaching, I was most associated with institutes and doing freelancing. I got most of my work through coaching institutions and references. One of my students recommended using UrbanPro, and I am glad that she did. Not only have I had a lot of queries recently, but being a part of this platform has helped me to reach out to masses and create an even better name for myself, especially in my locality.
Q5. What was the turning point in your career?
Ans. Being a law student, I had always strived to work in the legal profession. Things don’t always pan out the way you imagine; sometimes, they work out even better. I had started teaching IELTS as a freelancer after getting some fresher experience. Little did I know that I would be able to assist so many people and would be able to train candidates as per their requirements.
Helping students achieve their dreams prompted me to pursue the same line of profession. Receiving positive feedback and bringing students one step closer to their goals makes me feel content and complacent. What started as a teaching project quickly turned into my passion, which I enjoy thoroughly.
Q6. How has UrbanPro.com helped you so far as a Tutor?
Ans. Initially, I had some tough days because I was completely new to the platform. There were not a lot of enquiries, and I was unable to gather students from here. I decided to opt-out for Premium membership and got registered as a Platinum member. With time, I started getting requests from students and that added credibility to my profile. With the positive reviews that I have been receiving from my students and using the Urban Pro Live tools, my Pro score boosted tremendously. As a result, I am ranking at 1st position in my domain. I sincerely express my gratitude to the UrbanPro team for solving my queries timely and for promoting my profile.
Q7. What percentage of your work comes from UrbanPro.com?
Ans. I am able to attract 30% of my work from UrbanPro. I am hoping that it will keep on rising in future.
