Here is an excerpt of the interview with Ravi Kumar:

Q. How and when you started providing coaching for Medical Entrance Exams?

Ans. My passion towards teaching started way back in 2007, when I was a student pursuing first year, B.E Mechanical Engineering in PSG College of Technology. Initially, I started teaching in Orphanages and different college clubs. Then, I was selected as Teacher Trainer for my college. I used to conduct Hindi spoken classes in Tamil Nadu as very less number of people knew Hindi. I got selected for SHIMZU Corporation after my college. But I passion was always teaching. So I left my job and started working with The Gurukul Practice Center. After that I did my masters from Mumbai University and PGD from IIT, Mumbai. And from TGPC, I started guiding students for medical entrance exams.

Q. What do you think makes a good Medical Entrance exam trainer?

Ans. To be a good medical entrance exam trainer, you need to be friendly enough with your students, you need to understand their exact problems as individuals and then you should give an honest try to solve them. Your students should feel comfortable sharing their problems with you which can help you establish a good reputation and it is also a stepping stone towards becoming a successful tutor. I believe flexibility is an aspect which helps to adjust techniques and approaches, to meet learning requirements of a student.

  • Being patient is one of the most important aspects because what is easy for you may not be so for your student. Your speech and body language also plays an important role.
  • You need to be a good listener to understand what your student is feeling. A good listener will never dominate a conversation.
  • Being professional is very important in every job, so I do the same with my profession. I keep all information of my students confidential.
  • Sharing your experiences and lessons with your students goes a long way towards building trust and support. It helps students to build self-confidence.
  • As a tutor, your ultimate goal should be helping the student to become an independent learner.

Q. How you came across UrbanPro?

Ans. I am with UrbanPro (which was ThinkVidya) from the very starting of 2013. I used to get email about ThinkVidya and I registered with it. I did not have any idea about the website earlier but when I saw the results I was amazed. Since then, UrbanPro had been a part of my life.

Q. How UrbanPro platform helped you to expand your classes?

Ans. It’s been a wonderful journey with UrbanPro from the past 3 years. It has always given me more than my expectations and helped me a lot in expansion. The most rewarding moment is when happy parents come and thank me for their children’s success. The moment is very satisfying as a teacher.

Q. What do you think you wished you had known early on UrbanPro?

Ans. I wish I knew that uploading demo video classes, images and answering students’ queries help to increase a tutor’s credentials on UrbanPro.

Q. What percentage of your work comes from UrbanPro?

Ans. Almost 50% of my work comes from UrbanPro. I get many students through references. Over the last 3 years, UrbanPro has helped me built a good reputation as a Medical coaching expert in Navi Mumbai.

Q. One advice that you would like to give to new Pros on UrbanPro.

Ans. My advice to all upcoming pros ‘be honest and give your 100% dedication’. Be passionate about teaching and you will achieve great success!

Q. Your special achievement as a teacher.

Ans.

  • In my college life when I was teaching in clubs I got ‘Best Teacher’ award for 3 consecutive years.
  • I have got Students’ Choice Award in 2014
  • In 2014-15 session, I taught 85 underprivileged students, out of which 57 are in IIT and 12 are in NIT today, which is a record in India. For which I got four awards till date in national level.
  • The special achievement that I can proudly say is that ‘I feel always so great that I could be of some use to society and underprivileged students’. I love my work and that is all I could ever wish for.

Q. What was the turning point in your career?

Leaving SHIMZU Corporation and joining The Gurukul Practice Center was the turning point in my career. I was always interested in teaching and to be able to do what you like is a great thing!
